What we're looking for

What you can expect

So what could the role look like?
We spoke to Phil Risby, Head of Speciality Finance, Portfolio Management.
What is Portfolio Management within Structured Lending?
Our Structured Lending team provides debt facilities for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SME’s). Those debt requirements are often complex, due to either:
i) the nature of the SME that requires the debt (e.g. a specialist business such as healthcare company or housing developer), or
ii) the nature of the financing required (e.g. for a business acquisition). Shawbrook brings together these specialist teams under the Structured Lending banner.
Our Portfolio Management teams are split by sector into Financial Sponsors, Corporate Leverage, Asset Backed Lending and Speciality Finance. The Portfolio Management teams are the primary contacts for our existing customers, delivering a premium experience whilst also managing the facilities we provide, to ensure that they are performing from a risk perspective.
What does a typical day look like for you and your team?
I lead one of the Portfolio Management teams within Structured Lending, so my focus is on supporting our team who manage the facilities we provide and constantly keep in touch with our customers. A typical day will undoubtedly involve contact with our customers, mostly via email and phone, but does still include going out on visits, which I place a lot of store on. A day might also involve working on and eventually presenting proposals to our colleagues within Credit. The underlying purpose might typically be to increase/amend the facility to better suit our customers’ needs, although we’re constantly on alert for early warning signals, so we might proactively address those too. The team will also oversee documentation of the facilities and will liaise with our colleagues in operations to ensure the facilities run smoothly. The team has to call on an array of skills and attributes.
There are 6 Portfolio Managers in my direct team, and we like to support each other with what we’re each working on, collaborate to share best practices and keep up with news in our market. I’m also regularly thinking about their development and how to build their skills to help them move up in their careers.
Are there opportunities to progress in the future?
Absolutely! We’re always looking to progress high quality individuals and are proud of our track record of promotion from within and have supported a number of colleagues through the ranks to more senior roles. In Structured Lending Portfolio Management, individuals can be given a high level of responsibility at an early stage of their careers – helping them grow professionally and personally, of course with the support and coaching of senior management.
