Employees Chatting

1. Molly Madra and Julie Tate

It seems timely with International Women’s Day being this week (8 March 2022) that for the first in our ’60 seconds with…’ series, we chat to Molly Madra, Product Manager in Finance & Risk, and Julie Tate, Head of Delivery in Savings, to find out what brought them to Shawbrook, why they chose a career path in tech, and what piece of career advice they’d share with their younger selves…

What's your role and key areas of responsibility?

“I’m the Product manager for Finance & Risk. My role is to create and own a technology change and product portfolio roadmap, for both the Finance and Risk (CFO & CRO) functions. Promoting this to business stakeholders up to Board level, ensuring good communications and frameworks are in place.”

"I head up the CTO Delivery function for the Consumer Savings franchise, helping deliver digital products and services to help make it as simple as possible for our customers to deposit, access and manage their savings with us."

What attracted you to a career in tech?

“A career in ‘Tech’ didn’t exist when I started my career. But now, everyone working today, whether their job title says it or not, uses or is involved in tech in some way."

— Julie Tate, Head of Delivery in Savings

“Technology helps support everything we do in life and I find it fascinating that something that may have once taken two hours to process can be done in milliseconds today. I like building digital solutions to help make customers and colleagues lives easier.

I’m also a huge advocate of the STEM fields, and it’s important to me that I’m a role model to my family, my 2 girls and 2 boys. Our eldest boy is working in tech. One of the girls is doing an engineering apprenticeship and the other wants to be an architect.”

“My academic background is in electronics engineering, as I always found maths, science and technology very exciting. Although my current role isn’t directly related to engineering, my education helped me build a strong foundation to understand technology and bridge the gap between technology and businesses.”

What brought you to Shawbrook?

“Shawbrook is a fast-paced organisation with a lot of emphasis on supporting each another. The leadership team is extremely supportive and focussed on making Shawbrook a product-led company, investing not only in technology but also in people, so we have the right skills and tools to succeed in our roles.”

— Molly Madra, Product Manager in Finance & Risk

Julie added:

“Shawbrook doesn’t just talk the talk but walks the walk. The values here aren’t just posted on a website and forgotten about, they are in evidence throughout the bank at all levels, which is very rare.

The CTO function has grown from being a support function to being embedded in all business areas. I love that my team is connected to every part of the business, that we have a seat at the table and are being heard whilst adding value.”

If you could go back in time and give yourself once piece of career advice, what would that be and why?

“Don’t be afraid of going for a different role, even if you don’t think you have the relevant knowledge, good leaders are more interested in your overall skills, the values you display and your willingness to learn.”

“Be curious and have some fun!”

If you could snap your fingers and become an expert in something, what would it be and why?

“At the moment, it would be Finance Risk management and cryptocurrency.”

"I’m currently self-learning Azure as we move to cloud. I’m also a creative person and enjoying cooking (and eating!) so would love to be an expert chef, putting smiles on people’s faces after a hard day at school or work with a great plate of food!”
