Get your garden ready for a get together

Couple In Garden With Wine

Although DIY has been at the forefront of many lockdown agendas, garden DIY is often overlooked. With the sunshine making an appearance across the UK, many will be eager to get their gardens in good shape to invite friends over this summer.

Here, Sally Conway, Head of Consumer Communications, offers five tips on how to get your garden ready for those much-anticipated reunions.

  1. Give your fence a good coat of paint

Paint doesn’t just transform the inside of your home - it can do wonders outdoors too.

Painting the garden fence or shed can transform the look of a garden. It’s far cheaper than building or buying something new but a new colour can still alter how you view your garden.

Before you start painting though, you need to make sure you’ve prepared your surfaces properly.

  2. Add a glow to your garden

Outdoor lighting is a great way to add character to your garden and make those long summer nights more enjoyable.

Solar-powered lights can charge up during the day and then shine as the evening darkens.

There are lots of different styles available to suit your taste. Choose from torches that resemble flames, traditional fairy lights which look great placed inside a Kilner jar, or lightbulbs which you can hang from trees.

  3. Don’t forget about your tiles

Fancy tiles, creative brickwork, plants and some subtle lighting can turn an unloved screed of concrete into a beautiful patio that can truly be an extension of your home.

Add some cover and portable heating for the chillier days and you can create a space to be enjoyed in all bar the harshest of weather.

  4. Consider garden furniture

If your old deck chair has finally rotted through, then it’s time to look for some new garden furniture. And boy, what a choice there is these days.

From simple table and chair sets, to comfy zero-gravity lawn chairs, you can easily spruce up outdoor space.

You don’t need to spend a lot of money on furniture to achieve a new look. There is an abundance of DIY tutorials available online that can help you carry out your own upskilling project.

  5. Paying for your fabulous garden

Some of these ideas can be costly and more than you have set aside in your savings, so a personal loan could be an option.

It’s worth considering whether your garden additions will add to the value of your property before you start work, and always have a plan in mind of the work you want to do.
